The United Kingdom – minus one, possibly
Dear Reader
By the time this edition of Fenestra Build is on the streets, we may be able to claim a substantial readership in a foreign country!
10pm tonight for the public to cast their vote on independence. But what will happen once the ballot boxes close? The unofficial estimated time of the result is around 7am Friday morning, but the lack of precedent makes this hard to predict. Turnout is expected to be huge, so there will be more votes to count than usual. Some 97% of Scotland’s population (4.29 million adults) are registered to vote, the largest electorate the nation has ever known.
We may be worrying about entry visas and export licences to ‘Bonnie Scotland’ and that’s not to mention the currency, although it’s never been that easy to off load a Scottish fiver in the local chippie, at the best of times. All a storm in a tea cup? Who’s to say. Without straying into the deadly realm of politics in the columns of Fenestra Build, it has always struck me that this referendum is loaded against the status quo. It strikes me that if you ask people to vote on an issue it will always be the zealots, eager for change, that will fight their way to the polling booths, whereas a No vote – we’ll stay as we are – doesn’t make people think of voting with such fervour. It makes you wonder if the voting would be different if it was Yes to remain in the union, and No to a Scottish Republic.
All very interesting, but the landscape of the United Kingdom could look very different at this time tomorrow. Having read that an independent Scotland may not have access to the BBC, it seems that this is probably one of the best reasons for voting for independence. Why would anyone want it with its political bias, never ending repeats, and a licence fee that pays ludicrous salaries to people with ludicrous and unfathomable job titles? Happy days!
Thanks for reading.
Till next time.
Yours,
Christina

GGF Prepares For Busy Time At Party Conferences |
|
|
The GGF will yet again be in attendance at the political party conferences this Autumn to raise Members concerns across a range of political campaigns including:
Reducing the rate of VAT on home improvements and energy efficient glazing
The GGF has long argued for a reduced rate of VAT for energy efficient windows and doors, from the current 20% rate to a 5% rate – to bring energy efficient glazing into parity with other energy saving products. In addition, the GGF supports the wider campaign to cut the VAT on home improvement, repair and maintenance work from a rate of 20% to a rate of 5%.

BUILDERS TO MAKE THE CASE FOR NEW HOUSING AT PARTY CONFERENCES |
The National Federation of Builders (NFB) and the National House Building Council (NHBC) are jointly hosting a series of fringe events at this year’s political party conferences. The purpose of the events will be to call for new housebuilding to be a priority for the next government. The events will consist of a panel debate on the future of housing at the Labour and Conservative party conferences. At the events, audience members will have the chance to ask politicians and housebuilding experts the tough questions of how and where we build the new homes.
The events will be supporting the wider “Homes for Britain” campaign with the aim of ensuring that housing is high up the political agenda as we approach the next general election. The NFB will also be launching its manifesto for the 2015 election at the events.
Our speaker line up is as follows:
Labour Party Conference – The future of housing: how and where will we build the new homes?

Latest Green Deal Report No Surprise To GGF |
|
|
The GGF expressed no great surprise at The Energy and Climate Change Committee’s report into the Green Deal in which they brand the policy a “disappointing failure”. The Committee qualified their comment by adding that cost to customers was too high and the terms of the deal created uncertainty for providers. The Committee however has recommended offering homeowners discounts on stamp duty or council tax in exchange for making energy-efficient home improvements.
A combination of financial, communication and behavioural barriers has meant that the Green Deal has been slow to attract customers. Green Deal finance is, in principle, an attractive proposition, but the high interest rates attached to the loan, were putting off potential customers as many homeowners are able to find cheaper finance |

SOLAR WINDOWS COMPLETES WINDOW REPLACEMENT PROJECT FOR WALES & WEST HOUSING |
Leading commercial fabricator Solar Windows has just completed a large scale project for Wales & West Housing (WWH) under a framework agreement which represents the latest phase in a successful twelve year association between the two organisations.
Originally ‘partnered’ together in 2002, Solar Windows remains a key supplier to WWH and continues to manufacture and install REHAU PVC-U windows and doors for the housing association’s ongoing maintenance and replacement programme.
Most recently, Solar has installed 450 casement and tilt and turn frames in the REHAU TOTAL70C system in the West Lee housing complex in Cardiff, to replace single glazed aluminium windows which were in place previously.
This was part of a major refurbishment project designed to improve both the energy efficiency and security of the 130 flats and maisonettes within the complex. Alongside cavity wall insulation, the double glazed windows are key to improving the comfort levels for residents and reducing their energy costs.
The windows have been foiled in a Rosewood woodgrain finish and those which overlook the busy Cowbridge Road East in Cardiff |

Builders Finance Fund Failing To Help Small House Builders, Says FMB |
|
|
The Government’s ‘Builders Finance Fund’ is not helping the small house builders it was designed to assist, says the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).
Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said: “The Builders Finance Fund was originally trailed in the March Budget as ‘help for smaller builders’, but the 15 unit minimum threshold that has been applied has effectively excluded large numbers of small and micro firms that do not build to this scale. However, analysis of the shortlisted schemes reveals that over half of the schemes consist of more than 50 units which is a far cry from the small sites that the scheme was set up to help. A handful of firms, including some very large companies, are behind a third of the schemes shortlisted.”

Comment In Response To Output In The Construction Industry: July 2014 And New Orders April To June 2014 |
|
|
Comment to be attributed to Michael Dall, lead economist at construction intelligence specialist, barbour abi
In response to the Output in the construction industry:july 2014 and new orders april to june 2014
“It’s encouraging that new orders are continuing on a positive trajectory, but with the rate of growth slowing from recent quarters, today’s announcement still isn’t the silver bullet we need to dispel all concerns about the performance of the construction sector.
“What is particularly interesting in today’s figures is the growing strength of new orders in the private commercial sector and especially for office contracts where we’ve seen an increase by 29% in Q2 versus Q1 this year.
“Early indications from our monthly Economic and Construction Market Review however, point to a summer slowdown on the commercial |

New Louvre Roof System Set To Take On The British Weather |
An all weather louvre roof system for patios and terraces has been launched by Fledmex® UK, and the company is currently looking for UK installation partners. The German system fits with the growing outdoor living concept and allows owners to experience an alfresco environment when the louvres are open and enjoy a fully weatherproof haven when closed.
The Fledmex louvres can be opened up to 90 degrees to release hot air and provide a manageable climate on sunny days. The amount of shade on the patio can also be managed by adjusting the tilt angle of the louvres. In the event of a rainshower the louvres can be easily closed either manually or by electric motor/remote control, and outdoor events such as barbecues no longer need to be at the mercy of the British weather. |
